Colonna's Shipyard is currently hiring for a Lead Mechanic Supervisor for the Structural Shop for immediate work in Norfolk, VA.


  • Assist the Project Superintendent as directed.
  • Manage, supervise, and direct the day-to-day efforts of department tradesmen assigned to the project.
  • Train lower level mechanics and semi-skilled employees.
  • 75-80% of the time will be spent aboard assigned vessels supervising staff.
  • Ensure that all work done on the vessel and in-house is completed on time, on budget, and to the contract quality standards.
  • Inform staff of expectations and provide clear and consistent direction.
  • Providing training to new employees covering shop equipment and procedures.
  • Keep track of budgets and spending for their assigned jobs.
  • Maintain the right mix of skilled and semi-skilled employees working to keep the dollar cost as low as possible.
  • Provide ample notice of manpower needs and changes to the Resource Manager.
  • Manpower scheduling and maintenance to include controlling overtime hours.
  • Hold the employees accountable for the established goals and check their progress to those goals on a frequent basis.
  • Keep track of and minimize material costs, to include storeroom issues, subcontractors and job materials.
  • Evaluate the necessity and progress of subcontractors and temporary employees.
  • Provide input to the Superintendent concerning job/material costs, manpower hours and all other issues that may affect contract negotiations based on the job scope.
  • Report and initiate discipline for safety infractions in accordance with company policy.
  • Assist in determining project physical progress and project cost projections
  • Document completion and control to include Progress Sheets, discipline, timekeeping, charge numbers, attendance records, training and safety.
  • Fill out all daily hot work notices, daily day shift and night shift turn overs (written and hands on), employee time cards with vessel name and numbers, and requisitions for material.
  • Maintain the vessel, shops, and surrounding areas in a clean and safe condition.
  • Identify and address all issues that may affect the successful completion of assigned projects.
  • Identify and document any potential growth work, not only growth that is needed to complete the job assigned, but also in areas of the ship where there is no agreed work currently.
  • Be able to write routine reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals.
  • Become familiar with all work related documents such as drawings, manuals and bid specifications. Question requirements that are not clear or appear to be in conflict.
  • Identify improvements that can be made in yard work processes
  • Work independently to complete responsibilities.
  • Must have regular reliable attendance.
  • Other duties may be assigned as workload requirements dictate.
  • Must be able to work as a "Team member" with other LMS's within the shop to plan manning requirements for each vessel following the work load schedule.
  • Required to work overtime as the work dictates.


  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of ten years shipboard within the trade to be supervised (welding or ship fitting with knowledge of the other trade to accomplish the duties of the supervisor)
  • Technical training preferred
  • Expert knowledge of and ability to use hand tools and instruments associated with the trades
  • Must be able to work effectively with others and as a team with other supervisors within the shop
  • Must be a steady, reliable worker Must be self-motivated and able to complete responsibilities with minimal direction
  • Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc.
  • Use of measuring instruments
  • Knowledge of ship board terms
