    Colonna's Shipyard is looking to obtain experienced candidates within our Safety Department.


    We are pleased to accept resumes for Safety Inspector.


    This is a full-time position with competitive pay, based on experience, and immediate work within our headquarters in Norfolk, VA.

    Responsibilities

    Inspects equipment, tools, and working conditions to ensure safety of workers
    • Observes crews at work and reports/ corrects violations in safety precautions
    • Investigates accidents to determine causes and devises preventive measures
    • May instruct workers in use of safety equipment and safe work methods
    • Enforce safety rules and regulations
    • Conducts vessel, building and grounds surveys on periodic and regular basis to detect code violations, hazards, and incorrect work practices and procedures
    • Ensuring workers are provided with suitable protective equipment, such as eye goggles, ear protectors or appropriate types of gloves and clothing
    • Keeping up to date with new legislation and health and safety standards
    • Writing reports on results of inspections and investigations and completing detailed paperwork
    • Providing training and educational support to new/trainee employees
    • Prepares various safety and mishap reports
    • Understand and act upon instruction
    • Will be required to wear personal protective equipment- hard hat, safety glasses, steel toe boots/shoes and, when necessary, respirator
    • Work independently to complete responsibilities
    • Must have regular, reliable attendance
    • Other duties as assigned

    Qualifications

    Bilingual in Spanish, a plus

    Demonstrated knowledge of Federal safety regulations and job safety analysis required.
    Experience with behavior-based safety processes preferred.

    Minimum of 5 years industrial operations experience
    HAZMAT, CPR, and first aid training
    Maritime trade experience preferred
    Maritime rules and regulations: OSHA, NFPA, NIOSH, ANSI, EPA and State and Local regulations
    Effective oral and written communication skills; ability to effectively present complex topics in a concise manner
    Effective interpersonal skills dealing with people at various levels and in a variety of functions
    Experience with Microsoft Office products
    Knowledge of NAVSEA/MSC/USCG Standard Items preferred.
    Must have reliable transportation, maintain a current valid driver’s license with a record that allows the operation of company vehicles.

    OSHA 5410 / 5400 / 3095 / Shipyard competent person, a plus. These courses are part of the ongoing and initial training.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to heavy machinery, heights, noise, dust, dirt, fumes, gases, smoke, and confined spaces. There will be an exposure to extreme weather conditions. A considerable amount of time is spent operating a personal computer. Must be able to climb up and down stairs and spend time moving throughout the facility and on board marine vessels.
