    Colonna's Shipyard is looking to obtain experienced candidates within our Steel America Fabrication Shop.


    We are pleased to accept resumes for 1st Class Welder.


    This is a full-time position with competitive pay, based on experience, and immediate work within our headquarters in Norfolk, VA.

    Responsibilities

     

    • Weld together metal components of products, as specified by layout, blueprints, diagram, work order, welding procedures, or oral instructions, using electric arc-welding equipment
    • Weld completion in flat, horizontal, vertical, or overhead positions for at least three base materials using a wide variety of processes. 
    • Operate and set up of the following equipment, but not limited to:Hydraulic jacks and pumps, Chain falls, Com-alongs, Steamboat ratchets, Slings, Tie downs, Iron workers, Saws, Pneumatic and electric tools, Drill press, Pipe benders, Press brakes, Plate shears, Plasma cutting torches, All manual, semi-automatic, & automatic cutting torches & machines
    • Expertly repair base metal products and completed welds by adding the minimum amount of grinding/smoothing to meet job specification
    • Perform air-arc back gouging and oxy-acetylene torching, GTAW, and pipe welding, pipe flange and socket welding; as well as qualify to perform either flux cored inner shield welding, weld overlay cladding, automated back gouging, plasma back gouging or any combination thereof
    • Recommend WPS' and WPS upgrades required for a job; when assigned, produces or supervises production, documentation, and testing of PQRs and WPQ
    • Complete standard dimensional computations/devise bracing and weld sequencing steps to maintain tolerances and minimizing distortions

     

    Qualifications

     

    • Must be certified and documented to perform multi-pass, 1" carbon steel plate in all position fillet and butt welds using SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding), GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding), FCAW (Flux Cored Arc Welding) for steel, and any process for stainless steel or SAW (Submerged Arc Welding), GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding) nickel-based alloys, and for either aluminum alloys, copper-based alloys, or titanium alloys
    • Technical training or higher degree preferred with a minimum of 7 years of Welding experience
    • New construction or fabrication experience, a plus
    • Proficient reading all types of blueprints and weld symbols, drawing dimensions/tolerances, complex shapes and weld joints; build plans, sequencing, welding tools, jigs & fixtures, platforms/staging and work instructions to control distortion and improve quality-adjusted productivity
    • Enter and move through manholes, climb ladders, or both to reach and work inside confined spaces
    • Experienced with performing visual inspections of welds and fit-ups
    • Familiar with different forms of weld NDT and how specified NDT impacts selection and execution of weld processes
    • Must pass J-1 vision test and respirator fit test
