Colonna's Shipyard, Inc. is looking to obtain an experienced MarineTravelift Mechanic within our Maintenance/Dock Shop.
This is a full-time position with competitive pay, based on experience, and immediate work within our headquarters in Norfolk, VA.
Operate Marine Travelifts Safely/ Efficiently
Operate Marine Travel Lift (MTL) in a safe and efficient manner including manipulating or depressing controls such as a pedals, levers, and buttons, to regulate speed and direction of MTL; using hand and arm signals for installing, handling, positioning, and moving materials, and manipulating equipment; determining load weights and checking them against lifting capacities in order to prevent overload of the MTL. Overtime is frequently required
Run Through Preventative Maintenance Schedule
This includes inspecting the MTL for defective parts and notifying management of defects or malfunctions; maintaining records and logs of daily, weekly, monthly, annual and other preventative maintenance schedules; performing preventative maintenance (including checking air pressure, fluid levels and drive chains, cleaning etc.); scheduling subcontractors and ordering material and labor in order to keep certifications valid and machinery operating in like new condition.
Ensure safe docking evolutions
This includes performing safe and successful marine vessel lifts (docking and undockings) by coordinating with any/ all shops involved; observing load hookup and determine safety of loads; reviewing daily work and delivery schedules in order to keep the sequencing of lifts in the West Yard concurrent with the best interest of production; boarding ships via ladders, stairs and gangways with tool/ toolbags and other necessary equipment.
Address facilities/ safety/ hazmat concerns in West Yard
This included maintaining grounds surrounding MTL to ensure the absence of sharp objects, tools, and equipment that can cause damage (this will include-operating ground leveling equipment, if necessary0, prior to all docking and undockings, ensuring that all debris surrounding the vessel has been removed and any/ all production materials are removed by coordinating with superintendents or physically removing said equipment/ debris to a designated location out of the operation area; performing a daily walk- through of the facility including checking all underground utilities and the physical property (piers, MTL drive paths, bulkhead, and service station) and when necessary coordinating with other shops and ordering material necessary for the maintenance of the West Yard and any grounds where the MTL will be operated. the operator shall control the west yards trash and steel recycling bins and be responsible for calling in pick ups to insure space is available for operational debris.
Applicant must have regular, reliable attendance; must be able to work independently to accomplish tasks; must be able to understand and act upon instruction and control cost in assigned areas of responsibility. Also the employee will be required to wear personal protective equipment (i.e. hardhat, safety glasses, steel toe boots/ shoes and, when necessary, a respirator). Note: other duties may be assigned as workload dictates.
Must have high school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of 5 years of equipment operating experience with crane operating technical training preferred. Must have previously operated or maintained equipment involved in a PMS system with record keeping duties. Must have knowledge of and ability to use hand tools an instruments associated with the trade. Must be able to work effectively with others while comprehending and following instructions and must be a steady, reliable worker.
Position compensation is based on experience.
