    Colonna's Shipyard Inc., is looking to obtain an entry-level Naval Architect within our Facilities Department.


    This is a full-time position with competitive pay, based on experience, and immediate work within our headquarters in Norfolk, VA.

    Responsibilities

    • Design and prepare complete and accurate working plans, charts, scale drawings and revisions.
    • Function as a project engineer, design and oversee design for the docking and repair of marine craft and floating structures such as ships, barges, and tugs.
    • Apply engineering drafting methods and procedures with the operation and application of computer-aided design equipment (CAD) and software.
    • Design parts or marine systems compliant with relevant applicable codes and standard industry practices
    • Perform naval architecture calculations, e.g. stability/hydrostatic, weight distribution, etc.
    • When required, oversee testing, installation, and repair of marine apparatus and equipment.
    • Assist with creation of 3D models, engineering drawings, and bills of materials.
    • Conduct analytical, environmental, operation or performance studies in order to develop designs for products such as marine equipment and structures.
    • Attend various meetings in person, by phone, and using web services.
    • Provide naval architectural and marine engineering support to the department.
    • Assist in shipyard work packages for maintenance and repair.
    • Create concept level, preliminary design level, detail design level, and production level drawings, calculations, analyses, reports, and technical memoranda.
    • Supports facilities with technical and product process development.
    • Analyze data in order to determine feasibility of proposals.
    • Prepare plans, estimates, design and construction schedules, and contract specifications, including any special provisions.

     

    Qualifications

     

    • U.S. Citizenship required Ability to obtain a US DoD Security clearance, and ability to maintain clearance throughout employment.
    • Bachelor’s degree in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, or similar discipline with experience in ship design, construction, and repair of marine vessels desired; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
    • Requires a good working knowledge of ABS Rules and other Classification Societies.
    • Requires proficiency in AutoCAD, Microsoft Office, Stability Software, Modeling Software, and working knowledge with 3D environment required.
    • Requires excellent written, oral, and presentation communication skills.
    • Working knowledge of commercial shipyards and/or construction practices required.

    OTHER PREFERRED SKILLS/ABILITIES

    • Experience using 3D modeling software (SolidWorks Preferred).
    • High level of attention to detail.
    • Able to work in both office and production atmospheres.
    • Reliable and attentive and able to work in a team environment
