Colonna's Shipyard is looking to obtain experienced candidates within our Pipe Fitting Department.

We are pleased to accept resumes for 1st & 2nd Class Pipe Fitter, 1st. Shift.

This is a full-time position with competitive pay, based on experience, and immediate work within our headquarters in Norfolk, VA.



  •  Perform layout, fabrication, installation, testing and repair of pipe systems
  •  Install simple systems without the use of prints
  •  Perform target work for piping systems by taking an existing sample of an old piping system to
    make a new piping system
  •  Construct dimensionally correct mock-up for off-site prefabrication - read blueprints, fabricate
    stands and jigs, create targets. Construct within required tolerances. Track job from material list
    through completion
  •  Fit pipe and properly prepare joints for welding to meet the specific requirements of the system
    on which work is being done
  •  Utilize blueprints and makes fabrication sketches from which another mechanic could fabricate a
    unit of pipe to complete work assignments / read blueprints and drawings related to job
  •  Determine and apply joint and system tolerances
  •  Set up and operate burning torch
  •  Fabricate and design pipe hangars
  •  Test piping systems with air and water
  •  Tack Weld, Silver braze, soft solder and burn
  •  Install simple systems without blueprints
  •  Work with all materials and sizes of pipe and tubing
  •  Calculate take-ups of butt welds, socket welds, and threaded joints
  •  Lay out all piping systems
  •  Safely complete local air testing; compressed air testing; hydrostatic testing
  •  Operate pipe bending machines
  •  Evaluate joint allowances and build the piping systems within required tolerances
  •  Work with all types of pipe joints, welded, screwed, soldered, glued, and all types of materials;
    copper, CuNi, NiCu, Cres, Steel, etc.
  •  Train insubordinates and supervise crew as senior mechanic
  •  Adhere to industry codes, specifications, and regulations
  •  Understand and act upon instruction / work independently to complete responsibilities
  •  Must have regular, reliable attendance


  • High school diploma or equivalent
  •  5 years minimum in shipboard pipefitting experience
  •  Technical training preferred
  •  Knowledge of and ability to use hand tools and instruments associated with the Pipefitting trade,
    including but not limited to; pipe benders, bandsaws, bench grinders, drill presses, pipe threaders
  •  Must possess leader’s knowledge in troubleshooting skills
  •  Must have a leaders knowledge with: vessel repair specifications, NAVSEA standard items, and
    Coast Guard specifications
  •  Must have general knowledge with:
  •  NAVSEA TechPub 22D- Weld Joint Design
  •  NAVSEA MilStd 278- Fab. Welding-Piping
  •  NSTM piping sytems
  •  NAVSEA 0900-LP-001-7000 silver-brazed systems
  •  ABS rules (2-4-2) piping materials and welding
  •  ABS rules (4-6-1-7) Vessel systems- piping; ASME B16-5 pipe flanges and flanged
  •  ASME B31.9 pressure piping
  •  Must be able to work effectively with others
  •  Must be trained on the NAVSEA Standard Items that are applicable to the pipefitter trade and
    demonstrate an advanced understanding of bevels, types of backing rings, consumable inserts (E/B
    ring), open roots, saddles, miters and tolerances
  •  Comprehend blueprints, sketches, and template
  •  Must be able to calculate and understand units of measure, including fractions and decimals
  •  Must know how to measure using a scale and tape measure
