Overview

Colonna's Shipyard is looking to obtain experienced candidates within our Structural Department


We are pleased to accept resumes for Structural Welders.


This is a full-time position with competitive pay, based on experience, and immediate work within our headquarters in Norfolk, VA.

Responsibilities

  • ESSENTIAL DUTIES and FUNCTIONS

    • Weld together metal components of products, as specified by layout, blueprints, diagram, work order, welding procedures, or oral instructions, using electric arc-welding equipment
    • Select and execute best method to prepare all material surfaces to be welded, ensuring that there is no loose or thick scale, slag, rust, moisture, grease, or other foreign matter and to clean, degrease, deoxidize, or desmut weld joint or work piece, using wire brush, portable grinder, or solvent clean/chemical bath
    • Weld completion in flat, horizontal, vertical, or overhead positions for at least three base materials using a wide variety of processes. (That is, deposit weld beads exhibiting proper sidewall and interpass fusion, size, profile, interpass cleanliness, wrap and staggered, fused, and cleaned starts and stops rarely (no more than 3%) requiring grinding/dressing to meet VT acceptance standards)
    • Lay out work from blueprints for the following, but not limited to:
    • Plates for shearing, burning by manual or automatic burning and cutting,
    • Angles for punching and shearing, Drilling patterns, Templates for shaping steel, Plates and shapes to be shaped with or without heat, Stiffeners and bulkheads to plates, Bolt and fastener patterns for various parts, manholes, and equipment foundations
    • Inspect work for proper fit-up and adequate cleanliness for welding; locate materials, fabricate and install from blueprints the following, but not limited to:
    • Ladders, handrails. Stairways, grating, walkways Manholes and equipment foundations, Pipe racks and brackets, Pipe systems, Braces and supports to maintain straightness
    • Fabricate the following, but not limited to:
    • Fit brackets, panels, complex beam/shape structures
    • Plumb transverse bulkheads and panels to fabricate enclosure Complex weldments, Shapes and plates, Simple and complex parts from a drawing or sketch
    • Operate and set up of the following equipment, but not limited to:
    • Hydraulic jacks and pumps, Chain falls, Come-alongs, Steamboat ratchets, Slings,
    • Tie downs, Iron workers, Saws, Pneumatic and electric tools, Drill press, Pipe benders, Press brakes, Plate shears, Plasma cutting torches, All manual, semi-automatic, & automatic cutting torches & machines
    • Expertly repair base metal products and completed welds by adding the minimum amount of weld metal or heat and the minimum amount of grinding/smoothing to meet job specification
    • Perform multi-pass, all position fillet and groove welds using SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding), GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding), Submerged Arc Welding, FCAW (Flux Cored Arc Welding) processes, or the most efficient combination thereof for steels, stainless steels or nickel-based alloys, and for copper-based alloys, aluminum alloys, or titanium alloys
    • Also perform air-arc back gouging and oxy-acetylene torching (e.g. brazing, cutting, or pre-heating), GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding), and pipe welding, pipe flange and socket welding; as well as qualify to perform either flux cored inner shield welding, weld overlay cladding, automated back gouging, plasma back gouging or any combination thereof.
    • Mark or tag material with proper job number, piece marks, and other identifying marks as required and always mark completed welds with welder number
    • Perform single pass 5/16-inch minimum fillet welds in all positions using FCAW on carbon steel and at least ¼-inch single-pass fillets on two other materials
    • Supervise set up to perform welding in accordance with applicable WPS all welding equipment such as: wire feeders, Sub-arc tractors, Bug O's, Power sources,
    • Clean torches and connect/lay-out cables and whips to optimize performance and perform routine maintenance on all
    • Recommend WPSs and WPS upgrades required for a job; when assigned, produces or supervises production, documentation, and testing of PQRs and WPQs
    • Reliable, leads by example; trains less-killed welders, enforces good workmanship and safe welding practices throughout the work area; identifies gaps in weld process controls and weld process surveillance inspections and recommends corrective action
    • Perform comprehensive workmanship inspection, and when directed those of others, of all welds grinding and joint preparation for NDT processes as applicable; observe QA/NDT hold points as applicable
    • Complete standard dimensional computations/ Devise bracing and weld sequencing steps to maintain tolerances and minimizing distortions
    • Other duties as assigned

     

    QUALIFICATIONS

     

    • Minimum of five years commercial/naval experience.
    • Must be certified and documented to perform multi-pass, all position fillet and butt welds using the SMAW (Shielded metal arc) process.
    • Ability to fuse inserts and weld carbon steel, stainless steel and copper nickel pipe using the SMAW and GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding) processes.
    • Heating –Oxygen/Propane Heating Torch
    • Experience working in physically demanding environments (shipboard, sub-assemblies, ladders, staging, etc.)
    • Familiarity with OSHA regulations relative to the shipbuilding industry.
    • Ability to properly use fillet gauges, butt gauges, and a six-inch scale.
    • All positions using the SMAW and GTAW processes.
    • Thin wall sockets (required for below 0.187 wall joints).
    • Must be certified and documented to perform multi-pass, all position fillet and butt welds using SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding), Gas Tungsten Arc (GTAW), GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding), FCAW (Flux Cored Arc Welding), for steel, stainless steel or nickel-based alloys, and for either aluminum alloys, copper-based alloys, or titanium alloys

Qualifications

  • Must be able to demonstrate ability to perform multi-pass, all position fillet and butt welds using SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding), GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding) and FCAW (Flux Cored Arc Welding)
  • Knowledge of welding techniques (oxygen-acetylene, electric arc, and TIG), tools and equipment
  • Technical training preferred
  • Knowledge of and ability to use hand tools and instruments associated with the trade
  • Must be able to work effectively with others
  • Comprehend blueprints, sketches, and templates
  • Enter and move through manholes to reach and work in internally confined spaces
  • Must be a steady, reliable worker
  • Must be able to compared and follow simple instructions
