Overview

Colonna's Shipyard is looking to obtain experienced candidates within our Colonna's West Department for a Support Specialist.

 


This is a full-time position with competitive pay, based on experience, and immediate work within our shipyard in San Diego, CA. 

Responsibilities

  • CSW welding program OQE generation and maintenance. 
  • Will be supplying Matt Shilling all required information to be uploaded in to NAVWELD.
  • Tool room management through Hilti app.
  • In case of emergency he may be required to support Ship fitting, Fire watch , Rigging and general labor of OSM on board US navy ships on NBSD, BAE, NASSCO, and CMSD.
  • Weld together metal components of products, as specified by layout, blueprints, diagram, work order, welding procedures, or oral instructions, using electric arc-welding equipment
  • Prepare all material surfaces to be welded, ensuring that there is no loose or thick scale, slag, rust, moisture, grease, or other foreign matter
  • Weld completion in flat, horizontal, vertical, or overhead positions / burning, washing, edge prepping using hand and automated equipment
  • Operate manual or semi-automatic welding equipment to fuse metal segments, using processes such as gas tungsten arc, gas metal arc, flux-cored arc, plasma arc, shielded metal arc, resistance welding, and submerged arc welding
  • Manually apply filler rod to supply weld metal
  • Clean or degrease weld joint or work piece, using wire brush, portable grinder, or chemical bath. May repair broken or cracked parts and fill holes.
  • Set up and operate welding equipment and select proper electrodes according to metals to be joined or as instructed
  • Perform grinding and joint preparation for NDT processes
  • Flux cored inner shield and dual shield welding along with oxy-acetylene torching, air-arc, weld-wire gas, stick and pipe flange
  • Construct or repair metal products by joining parts either manually (using a variety of welding methods including electric arc, MIG and TIG welding or oxy-acetylene welding) or by machine
  • Read and understand the Chemist and Competent Persons reports and determine if job sites, particularly those involving combustible material, are safe for personnel and hot work
  • Perform grinding and joint preparation for NDT processes
  • Perform multi-pass, all position fillet and butt welds using SWAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding), GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding), and FCAW (Flux Cored Arc Welding) processes
  • Mark or tag material with proper job number, piece marks, and other identifying marks as required
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Understand and act upon instruction / work independently to complete responsibilities
  • Must have regular, reliable attendance
  • Issue tools and equipment to workers and maintains records of tools and equipment issued and returned, manually or using computer
  • Inspect and measure tools and equipment for defects and wear, visually or using micrometer, and reports damage
  • Issue replacement tools to employees as required
  • Tear down and inspect incoming tooling and equipment for defects and wear
  • Perform inventory of the tools in the tool room
  • Maintain records of tools issued to and returned by workers
  • Mark and identify tools and equipment, using identification tag, stamp, or electric marking tool
  • Prepare inventory reports for the supervisor
  • Investigate and search for missing tools
  • Receive, unpack, and store incoming tools and equipment, and requisitions stock to replenish inventory
  • Utilize proper storage methods to increase availability and minimize loss
  • Maintain an organized tool room
  • Ensure tools are checked out and returned properly
  • Schedule preventative maintenance on the equipment
  • Route damaged, dull and broken tools for repair, sharpening and or replacement
  • Perform electrical safety checks on the equipment in accordance with approved procedures
  • Clean, oil, and perform minor repairs on equipment and tools
  • Ensure that measuring devices are periodically calibrated
  • Provides Hull Gaging oversight and compliance for the Company
  • Ensures required workmanship training for weld and NDT are conducted and documented throughout the Company
  • When required, performs inspections, attends checkpoints, writes, monitor, tracks required reports and test and inspection plans
  • Oversees and manages the daily activities in the Weld-TEC

Qualifications

  • Must be able to demonstrate ability to perform multi-pass, all position fillet and butt welds using SWAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding), GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding), and FCAW (Flux Cored Arc Welding).
  • Knowledge of welding techniques, (oxygen-acetylene, electric arc, and TIG), tools and equipment.
  • Able to interpret blueprints, work specifications, and field drawings.
  • Must have shipboard experience / Knowledgeable with Navy standard items.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use hand tools and instruments associated with the trade.
  • Must be able to work effectively with others.
  • Enter and move through manholes to reach and work internally confined spaces.
  • Knowledgeable with NDT and workmanship requirements.
  • Knowledgeable with shipboard terminology and nomenclature.
  • Able to communicate with customer, customer representatives and supervisor.
  • Requires basic levels of mathematical, reading, writing and communication skills necessary to successfully accomplish the job description, skills and ability requirements as outlined above.
  • Requires visual acuity necessary and appropriate to perform all job duties and requirements as listed.
  • Requires auditory acuity capable of hearing a forklift back-up alarm, moving vehicle horns, or other safety alarms and warning signals.
  • Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels.
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Must have the ability to interact well with others
  • Previous experience in a tool crib environment is required
  • Proficient with the use of hand and power tools
  • Mechanical aptitude, along with a working knowledge of various hand tools, materials and equipment used in shipyard repair operations is preferred
  • Must be able to work nights and weekends
  • Must have tool setup experience
