Overview

Colonna's Shipyard is looking to obtain an experienced Safety Manager within our Safety Department.
 
 
The Safety Manager ensures a safe workplace through education, training, and enforcement of policy in compliance with government regulations and corporate requirements. This position will assist in the development and implementation of safety procedures and processes to enhance our positive Safety Culture and ensure the Safety of the operation.
 
 
This is a full-time salaried position with competitive pay, based on experience, and immediate work within our headquarters in Norfolk, VA.

Responsibilities

  • Direct ongoing safety program to help ensure job safety and accident prevention
  • Train supervisory and hourly personnel in current safety related issues
  • Documentation of training programs
  • Enforce safety rules and regulations
  • Assist departments in selection of needed safety equipment
  • Disseminates information to department heads and others regarding toxic substances, hazards, carcinogens, and other safety information
  • Assists department heads and administrators in enforcing safety regulations and codes
  • Conducts building and grounds surveys on periodic and regular basis to detect code violations, hazards, and incorrect work practices and procedures
  • Maintains administrative control of records related to safety and health programs
  • Develop and implement company safety procedures, processes and programs which ensure the safety of the operation, which are compliant with the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) and other local, state, and federal rules and regulations
  • Develop and implement safety awareness programs, which are behavior-based and contribute to increased awareness of core safety program elements
  • Participate in the investigation, documentation and analysis of accidents and injuries and maintains a follow-up system to ensure corrective action is promptly implemented
  • Lead, develop or coordinate supervisory, new hire, and contractor training programs which will increase proficiency in safe practices and promote safety consciousness.
  • Responsible for serving as a technical resource to support associates, at all levels, on safety-related issues.
  • Maintain OSHA log, written safety plans, training records and other reporting requirements
  • Conduct/participate in department meetings and promote an open line of communication with other team members
  • Ensuring workers are provided with suitable protective equipment, such as eye goggles, ear protectors or appropriate types of gloves and clothing
  • Represent company in meetings, seminars, committees etc.
  • Other duties as assigned 

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Federal safety regulations and job safety analysis required.
  • Minimum of 5 years industrial operations experience
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) preferred.
  • HAZMAT, CPR, and first aid training
  • Maritime trade experience preferred
  • Maritime rules and regulations: OSHA, NFPA, NIOSH, ANSI, EPA and State and Local regulations
  • Proven leadership skills – able to influence and motivate others to quickly achieve results.
  • Demonstrate high energy, passion for excellence, bias for action, adaptability, and resilience.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills; ability to effectively present complex topics in a concise manner
  • Effective interpersonal skills dealing with people at various levels and in a variety of functions
  • Must have reliable transportation, maintain a current valid Driver’s License with a record that allows the operation of company vehicles.
  • Knowledge of NAVSEA/MSC/USCG Standard Items preferred
  • Must hold current “DBIDS” or be eligible for access to Naval Installations & Bases.
