Colonna's Shipyard is looking to obtain experienced candidates within our Quality Assurance Department, for an Inside Machinist Shop Dimensional Inspector.


The IMS Dimensional Inspector conducts visual and dimenstional test to ensure the quality of finished prodoucts. Responsible for oversight, development, implementation, surveillance and reporting requirements for machine work, per customer requirements. 

This is a full-time position with competitive pay, based on experience, and immediate work within our headquarters in Norfolk, VA.



  • Audits work of in-house and subcontracted jobs for conformance
  • Assists with Test and Inspection creation
  • Required to perform the duties of a discipline lead, and/or interface with other disciplines in accordance with departmental procedures and standards 
  • Logs and distributes Check/Hold Point Notifications.
  • Interface with Customer/Government/Third Party inspectors to accomplish contract required inspections.
  • Generate reports of conditions found during inspection activities, notify production, Supervisors and Quality Assurance/Quality Control management of significant problems, completes documentation necessary to attest to satisfactory completion of inspection or test activities
  • Task NDT Inspectors to conduct the magnetic particle and dye penetrant testing of parts
  • Receives notification from both subcontractors and in-house for Tests and Inspections
  • Assist in the distribution of updates to Test and Inspection Plans
  • Performs pre-inspections of completed work
  • Conducts, Attends, Witness and Verifies Tests and Inspections
  • Complete inspection records
  • Compile inspection records in a final inspection package for submission to customers
  • Witnessing tests and in-process inspections
  • Understand and act upon instruction
  • Work independently to complete responsibilities
  • Will wear personal protective equipment (PPE) when necessary
  • Regularly ascend and descend ladders, stairs, scaffolds, etc… for completion of inspections
  • Enter confined spaces when necessary to complete inspections
  • Position requires frequent bending, squatting, standing, walking, climbing,
  • Must have regular, reliable attendance
  • Other duties as assigned




  • Previous ship repair experience required
  • Must have a strong understanding of Government Specs
  • Must have knowledge of NAVSEA Standards, QA Standards
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience of field Quality Assurance/Control experience
  • ABS manufacturing/repair experience
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience performing inspections in a machine shop environment.
  • Valid driver’s license and a good DMV driving record
  • Ability to obtain access to government facilities
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office products
  • Strong communication skills both written and verbal
