Overview

Weld America a division of Colonna's Shipyard, is hiring for experienced First Fitters for Part-Time, Project Based Employment.

Responsibilities

      • Complete lay-outs using drawings and/or templates and/or by picking up and developing the geometry required from lofting floor
      • Physical assembly in prefabrication and erection on the building site of individual structural elements or prefabricated panels and three dimensional sub-assemblies
      • Sequencing of assembly and fitting
      • Proficiency in use of tools and equipment such as: come-alongs, hydraulic jacks, wedges, dogs, speed wrenches, spiders, planes, saws, chainfalls, band-saws, turn buckles, grinders, sheers, press brakes, plate rollers, bending machines, operation of fork lift to perform functions inherent to the job
      • Some minor rigging ability not normally requiring the use of overhead cranes
      • Print reading ability
      • Tack welding with stick and semi-automatic welding equipment
      • Advanced level experience with the use of cutting torches and heat torches in plate heat- straightening and shrinkage
      • Ability to provide instructions to other Fitters
      • Some working knowledge with stainless steel and aluminum
      • Advanced knowledge and full qualification with the following:
        • Brackets, Angle stiffeners, Alignment, Collars, Liners, Doublers (slot weld), Forming & Flame Shrinking, Distortion Prevention/Correction, Templating & Targeting, Lay-out & Scribing, Non-tight member inserts, Bulkhead & deck inserts, Edge preparations (butt, corner, tee lap, and edge joints; single & double: square, bevel, “V”, “J”, “U”, and flare),Shell plating inserts & renewal, Shell plating (multi-strake renewals), Tack welding (steel- SMAW & FCAW), Tack welding (aluminum- GMAW), Fracture excavation techniques,
        • Water & oil stops, Joint considerations- transition and stress, Final cutting & beveling (hand torch), rat holes, scallops & compensation, shop and field fabrication for steel and aluminum
        • Burning testing, local air testing, commercial and government air testing, tank hydrostatic  testing, Safe handling, use and storage of gasses, Safe work practices and PPE, Safe tank opening practices, Lock Out/Tag Out, Confined space practices, Respirator fit, Safety harness, Oil spill response, Safe welding practices (29 CFR) Hot work, Firewatch

           

Qualifications

 

  • Burn, cut pipe, bend pipe
  • Tack weld with Carbon, Stainless Steel, Copper nickel, and Aluminum
  • Install simple systems without the use of blueprints and drawings
  • Understand functions of all systems and components
  • Understand corrosion prevention and grounding
  • Determine and apply joint and system tolerances
  • Ability to obtain a DBIDS is a PLUS
  • Have a Working knowledge with the following codes, regulations and specifications:
    • NAVSEA standard items, Coast Guard Standard Specifications, AWS guide for steel hull                    welding, AWS guide for aluminum welding
  • Have a General knowledge with: 
    • NavSea TechPub 22D- weld joint design
    • NavSea MilStd 1689- fabrication- structural,
    • NavSea 0900-LP-001-7000 Silver Brazed systems
    • ABS Rules (2-4-1) Mat./Welding- hull Construction
    • ABS Rules (3-2-16) Hull Const. Weld Design
    • ABS Rules (4-6-1-7) Vessel systems- Piping
    • NSTM Chapter 505- Piping systems
    • ASME B16-5 Pipe Flanges abd Flanged Fittings
    • ASME B31.9 Pressure piping
  • Technical training preferred
  • Knowledge of and ability to use hand tools and instruments associated with the trade
  • Must be able to work effectively with others
  • Comprehend blueprints, sketches, and templates
  • Enter and move through manholes to reach and work in internally confined spaces
  • Must be a steady, reliable worker
  • Must be able to compared and follow simple instructions

Compensation & Benefits

Position compensation is based on experience.

 

Part-Time Employees are not eligible to recieve benefits.
