Overview

Steel America is looking to obtain experienced candidates within our Fabrication and Design department.


We are pleased to accept resumes for our Design Engineer position.


This is a full-time position with competitive pay, based on experience, and immediate work within our headquarters in Norfolk, VA.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares shop fabrication drawings, parts drawings, and erection drawings in accordance with customer supplied contract drawings and/or in-house designed structures.
  • Perform calculation and analysis to determine the amount of materials needed for a job.
  • Prepares Bill of Materials, Material Cutting Schedule, and Plate Nesting Summary.
  • Prepares CNC files to support steel processing of Burning Machine, Plate Roller ,and Accurpress Bending Machine.
  • Prepares DSTV files to support steel processing of Beam Cutter Machine.  
  • Prepares 3D model for parts, sub-assemblies and assemblies.  
  • Integrate quality and safety measurements and prevent any risks in the execution methods and sequence drawings
  • Identifies and selects materials needed for production.
  • Negotiates appropriate production processes.
  • Ongoing Technology training for new design process will also be taught and expected to be a learned skill that is kept current and up to date.
  •  Experience and Education: Performs work under general supervision. Handles moderately complex issues and problems, and refers more complex issues to higher-level staff. Possesses solid working knowledge of subject matter. May provide leadership, coaching, and/or mentoring to a subordinate group
  • Assist Superintendents and Planners in preparing Build Plan for incoming Projects.
  • Assist to evaluate and review documents, drawings submitted by sub-contract detailers for approval process.
  • Directly support the Project Superintendents and Planning Team in which work is being Designed for.
  • To prepare submissions of specific shop drawings to Client/Project Manager as required
  • Assist to Develop and implement processes, procedures and standards for Design Team department
  • Perform structural analysis and design for assigned projects in compliance with applicable codes for review when required.
  • Communicate and coordinate with other disciplines including mechanical and electrical, internal project management, purchasing and manufacturing departments to provide accurate structural approval and detailed production drawings to ensure their requirements are incorporated in the structural drawings
  • Provide assistance in the development and maintenance of standard structural practices for drafting and fabrication of structures
  • Attend coordination/review meetings and assist on design and details and approval of the same
  • Maintain Project records through creation and management of document transmittal and recording system
  • Work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Well versed in all technical aspects of structural steel detailing
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Work independently to complete responsibilities
  • Must have regular, reliable attendance

Qualifications

  • Experience with marine settings and steel fabrication and some knowledge of Marine ship repair in the industrial setting is a plus. Bachelor’s degree or Associates degree or 2-4 years of relevant design experience in a construction setting.
  • Experience in AWS, AISC, NAVFAC, NAVSEA is a plus.
  • Must have excellent attention to detail to ensure the work is accurate, precise and all safety regulations and industry standards are complied.
  • Strong PC skills to include Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Microsoft Project
  • Must have experience with Autocad, Solidworks or any 3D modeling software.
  • Hands on experience in preparing detailed plans, drawings and other documents for the manufacture and erection of steel members
  • Be able to identify and collect the necessary information required and accurately transform it into acceptable output
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong mathematical skills and ability
  • Good organizational skills to keep track of documents, files and record of assigned projects.
